RADICAL NEW SOLUTIONS
The two main challenges facing the Electricity Industry are Climate Change and Security of Supply.
The E.U. has set a target for near-zero carbon electricity by 2050. This is a huge challenge which will involve an ever more rapid shift to Distributed Energy Resources underpinned by Renewable Energy – Renewable Energy Sources which are inherently intermittent in nature and weather dependent.
The day is fast approaching where radically new solutions will be needed to provide Grid Reliability in the face of an increasingly volatile mix of Intermittent Renewables – volatile in terms of reliability, size, location and power quality.
The Tallaght Smart Grid Test Bed has demonstrated already that consumers in local areas (communities) can actively collaborate to provide for the stabilization, quality and dependability of the Grid by developing local Self-managing Grid-supportive Cells.
